From the inside and outside, pipe penetrations from HVAC should be sealed completely to prevent air leakage.

Your HVAC technician is going to be looking for avenues to ensure proper spacing of fresh air and exhaust vents. Invite them into the planning process so that you can determine the ideal path and prepare your framing, insulation and air sealing.

Appropriate sealants include:

• polyurethane spray foam insulation
• acoustic sealant
• mastic
• compatible tapes / peel and stick membranes (for continuity of weather barrier on exterior)
• Grommets with peel and stick and EPDM seals
