Whether you've got a wood stove pipe or a masonry chimney, the transition from conditioned to unconditioned space must be sealed.
The framed area around the chimney - the 'chase' - is what you're sealing, to prevent air leakage happening around the chimney or pipe.
Very important things to remember:
- Anything that touches a masonry chimney or the stove pipe MUST be non-combustible.
- Use sheet metal to bridge the gap between wood framing and masonry, sealed with high temperature caulking.
- Only step on the FRAMING when working in attic spaces. Bring a narrow piece of 3/4" ply to set across framing as a make-shift platform.
- Create a shield of non combustible material around the chimney to prevent additional insulation from touching the chimney.
