Attic Hatches (Scuttles)

LISTEN...

Just like a chimney chase, an attic hatch may allow air leakage. Especially in older homes, the hatch is a nicely trimmed hole in the ceiling and not much more.

The best way to air seal and insulate an attic hatch is by building a box on the attic side of the opening, to act as a kind of air lock. You will be able to seal twice and provide for more insulation.

From "Keeping the Heat In" NRCan.

The box allows you to pile in the attic thermal layer to a good depth, without having to worry about stuff pouring into your living space when you need to get up there.

Don't feel like building one? You can buy one off the shelf!

Things to remember:

  • Make sure the attic hatch is framed properly, just like a stair well opening.
  • Only step on FRAMING when you're up in the attic space - bring up a narrow piece of 3/4" plywood for a makeshift platform to step on.
  • Seal both openings - the top of the box AND the finish layer lid you can see from below. Weather strip material will do.
  • Make sure that the hatch can be closed tightly!
