2nd Law of Thermodynamics

LISTEN...

The second law of thermodynamics says that when energy changes from one form to another form, or matter moves freely, entropy (disorder) in a closed system increases.

Plain Language: Heat energy will always spread itself out evenly, following the path of least resistance. This is why, when we heat our homes in the winter, we need to insulate the ceilings, walls, and floors to contain the heat that would otherwise escape to the colder outside environment.

How does heat flow? (Always from Warm to Cold)

  1. Conduction - through a solid surface - through ceilings, walls, floor
  2. Radiation - through light (infrared) waves - through glass
  3. Convection - warm air floats on cold air - warm air rising
