Find Your Personal Keywords

People search for information on Google, but they find experts on LinkedIn. However, much link Google search results, they won't go to the bottom of the last page - they'll go with the top hits.

So you definitely want to rank on the first page. To do this, we're going to add important keywords to your profile.

You now need to find out what those top keywords are. Some of them will revolve around the Skills of your profile (which we quickly explored in the first milestone with the "More" task), but most will come from your industry and the most common words people will use to find you.

You don't need a bunch, just a few really specific ones that relate to your industry and expertise. You can't rank for everything, so pick wisely.

The more common keywords - like "Marketing" or "Recruiter" will generate lots of results and will be very hard to rank for quickly. However, if you can make it more specific - such as "sports marketer" or "corporate recruiter" - you'll narrow down the results.

You may also want to use related keywords with are associated with core keywords. You can do this from within LinkedIn from the "Skills" page mentioned above. Typing in "sports marketing" for example:

You'll see the related search terms on the left, some quick stats on the market of the term, ideas to localize the term geographically, and then of course groups that related to the term (you'll notice mine is ranked first for this term as well).
