Early stage investors have to bet on startups that will be unicorns:

• Greater than 250% y/y growth
• Massive markets ($1B+)
• Obvious companies for future acquisition

which means they pass on companies that may take 5-10 years to "grow-up" in medium-sized markets with no obvious acquirer… which is nearly every single Canadian startups.
