Recurring themes

While far from complete, and some 'methods' merely flagged, there are a number of recurring themes. They play into several of the characteristics of complex adaptive systems. But nearly all of them have some version of sense, try, reflect to help build an understanding of the territory and find the best next step, and a longer learning cycle capture, share, evolve to prevent (information) getting lost and enable others to follow.

Approach:

  • Collaborative & social, it's rarely done in isolation or to someone
  • Emergent (with intend), leaving space for the unexpected to manifest itself
  • Immersive, being part or one with the system one is influencing
  • Iterative, cyclical, many small steps or sequences make for large impact

Actions:

  • Informed understanding, articulation to the best of existing knowledge, with an open mind, and sensing, feeling and/or noticing what happens.
  • Prototyping, testing, trying things to see how the system responds
  • Reflection, it can take time and a quiet mind to see or feel the patterns and relationships
  • Capture and share what has been learned, a living memory for yourself and others.

Mindsets:

  • Curious
  • Humility
  • Compassion
  • Present & Calm
