This module will cover the different control layers/barrier systems that are required in new homes. Many existing homes may have all or most of these systems, but depending on when the home was built and the construction techniques used, the home may be missing one or more system.

Each control layer has a clearly defined purpose, and the main consideration is where, when, and how they get installed. There are different techniques and ways to install the different control layers. Some control layers (such as the air barrier) may be installed anywhere throughout the home (exterior or interior), and some require specific placement, depending on how the home is constructed. For each control layer, we will look at the function of the control layer, the criteria it must meet, materials needed, placement in the home, and issues due to improper installation.
