Make sure to check for insect/animal damage in older homes, building components may need to be fixed prior to installing insulation. Older types of insulation may need to be removed from the wall cavity before installing the new insulation.

Insulation materials installed within older homes could potentially have asbestos in them. Asbestos should not be disturbed as it can cause serious health issues. If insulation materials are found to contain asbestos, notify the client and have it mitigated (dealt with) before completing the job. Always follow provincial/territorial requirements for asbestos abatement.

These are not all of the issues that are encountered within existing homes. Each home is unique and may present interesting challenges and issues that need to be addressed before insulation can be installed. Keep an eye out for anything that needs to be fixed or replaced.
