While many standards and tools exist for designing an energy-efficient near net zero building, the new BC Energy Step Code (the Step Code) is an excellent basis for understanding performance-based energy efficiency metrics and targets. It is a voluntary performance path which is currently being implemented in many municipalities throughout BC, and provides a potential framework for improved building energy efficiency for the rest of Canada and a potential pathway to Canadawide near net zero new construction.
