This assembly can accommodate several air barrier strategies. However, often the most straightforward one to use is the exterior sheathing membrane.
If the sheathing membrane is to form the air barrier, it must be taped and sealed to ensure continuity.
Alternatively, a sealed sheathing approach can be used, or potentially an airtight drywall approach or airtight polyethylene, though ensuring continuity of the latter interior air barrier approaches can be arduous. Continuity of the air barrier at transitions and penetrations is critical to its performance.
