Tips 1-5

1. Get to Know Your Zone

Like any big city, New York has several distinct districts, each with its own character, quirks and individual features. Instead of trying to get your head around the bustling centres of the city, spend some time getting to intimately know the area within walking distance of your dorm or apartment. Check out and become a regular at your local coffee shop or bar, find out which grocery stores have the best deals… you'll find everything much more manageable this way!

2. Choose an Apartment Close to the Necessities

If you decide that dorm life isn't for you (and to be fair, it's not for everybody), then make sure your chosen apartment is within easy walking distance of the essentials. We're talking fruit and veg shops, launderettes, at least one decent cafe, and - if you don't drive - a subway station, too!

3. Take Up Yoga or Meditation

If you want to find a cheap solution to the stress of city life, get down to your local yoga class, or follow some online meditation lessons. There are hundreds of highly affordable yoga courses in New York, and it's a proven way to help get your head in order (as well as keeping your body limber, too).

4. Be Up to Date With Taxi Apps

The world of public transport took a giant leap forward with the introduction of apps like Uber. Driving in New York is a nightmare for most of us, but taxi apps like this one make getting around a breeze.

5. Learn How To Cook

There's an old saying that we think is a great one to live by: if you know how to cook, you know how to be healthy. Even if you think of yourself as useless in the kitchen, it's never been easier to look up simple, straightforward and healthy recipes online - get accustomed to the basics, and before long, you'll be a culinary champion. It'll certainly help you avoid relying on fattening take-out food all the time, and once word gets out about your newfound skills, you might find your dating life takes an upwards turn, too!
