Thermal Bridges & Breaks

Some of the most common areas for thermal bridging are junctions between structural materials - foundation and wood plates, for example. At the planning stage, the PH designer needs to highlight the areas where thermal bridging is likely to occur, and provide a thermal BREAK - insulation that breaks the flow of warm to cold and eliminates the bridging.

Common thermal bridge areas?

  • Door and window frames
  • Wall plates
  • Rafters / trusses at top plates
  • Foundation - under slab to foundation wall and mud sill
  • Corner junctions with multiple studs
  • Cantilivered areas
  • Beam pockets and squash blocks
