SOME TYPICAL HAZARDOUS MATERIALS:

  • Lead: When it accumulates in your body, Lead may cause serious health problems. It may be found in:
    • paints, piping, and flashing materials around windows and doors.
  • Asbestos: Breathing in asbestos fibres may cause serious respiratory problems; it is a known carcinogen. It may be found in:
    • old building and pipe insulation,
    • fabricated materials such as gaskets and floor tiles,
    • wall panels, duct wrapping and wallboard joint compounds.
    • may be present in some plaster and textured stucco finishes
  • Mercury: This liquid metallic substance should not come in contact with skin or be digested. Mercury may be found in
    • light bulb ballasts (flourescent lights),
    • And old thermostats and switches.
  • Silica: . Breathing in silica dust may cause respiratory problems. It may be found in:
    • mortar, plaster and stucco applications
  • Galvanized pipes: Old galvanized pipes may deteriorate and leach into drinking water - these pipes must be disconnected and removed. Galvanized pipes may be found in older homes:
    • in water pipes for supply and drainage.
  • Vermiculite: Some old applications of vermiculite as insulation may contain asbestos.
