COP 26 Race to Zero

There is a collective effort taking place across municipalities across the world to show municipal leadership at COP 26. There is a recruitment effort to build a strong contingent of Canadian municipalities to showcase municipal leadership.

There are 5 requirements of the Cities Race to Zero Pledge:

  1. Endorse the following principles: Recognize the global climate emergency; Commit to the 1.5 degree Celsius goal of the Paris agreement (science based targets); Committed to inclusive climate action at the center of decision making; work in partnership across governments and sectors of society.
  2. Pledge to reach net-zero in the 2040s or by mid century.
  3. Plan to set an interim 2030 target consistent with a fair share of 50% of global emissions reductions (If this is not your present 2030 target that is okay, there would however be the need to update the 2030 target within a couple of years).
  4. Proceed with implementation with at least one of your climate actions.
  5. Publish your target and report on progress (this reporting doesn't have to be duplicative of other reporting mechanisms (ex. PCP, CDP, etc.).
