Blintz Base: How To Make An Origami Masu Box

The blintz base is an origami base form that comes from Western influences on the craft. The name of this origami base comes from the fact that it resembles a pancake-like dish called a blintz that is popular in many parts of Eastern Europe.

To make a blintz base, you start by folding the paper in half horizontally. Unfold, then fold the paper in half vertically. Unfold once more. Fold each of the four corners into the center to complete the blintz base form.

In more advanced projects, you might be asked to blintz your paper multiple times to create a double or triple blintz. The folds can be done on top of each other or you can flip the paper over to vary the design a bit.

The origami masu box is one example of a project that uses the blintz base form.

To make a masu box:

  1. Create a blintz base.
  2. Fold the top and bottom sides to the center of the paper. Unfold.
  3. Fold the left and right sides to the center of the paper.
  4. To form the sides of the box, open the two corners diagonal to each other. Leave the other two corners folded in. Bring the corner folds in as you pull the third edge upwards. Tuck the top flap in. This gives you a box with three sides.
  5. Repeat the process on the other side of the paper to complete the box form.
  6. If you want to make a box that closes, you can cut a second sheet of paper that is 1/4 to 1/2 inch smaller than the first to make a base for the box. The folding procedure for the smaller paper is exactly the same.
