Defining Customer Development

You need to setup your FREE LeanCanvas account or print out and make a giant version of the business model canvas and post it to the wall.

Let's construct a hypothesis about your business based on each segment and then get out of the house (or the building) and test them.

Customer development is actually a simple 4-Step process with 2 different phases:

  1. Customer Discovery: This is the first step of the search phase. This is where I construct my hypotheses and get out of the house and start testing my assumption about whether other people have the same problem.
  2. Customer Validation: Here I'll see if my proposed solution actually matches what I think the customer problem was. This is sometimes called product/market fit... This is the search for my business model.
  3. Customer Creation: This is the first step in the execution phase of customer development. It's about creating end-user demand and scale.
  4. Automation (or Company Building): Now it's time to transition from customer development to a functional business that's oriented to constant and functional execution using an automated architecture.

Lesson 2: Do I Guess, Or Test? (Test is the answer BTW)
