Resocializing Social Media

What if we changed the scale of social media? Local networks, limited to the Dunbar number, which allowed meaningful interaction (and social self-monitoring, akin to lived life/experience).

Recognition that social media that "demands face-to-face interaction"

Recognition that social media has lost the social controls preserves self-management incentives

Recognition that fiscal support (for a "local" social network) could come from local business: reflective of the cultural particularities and interests

There is a need to "build down" - fit technological structures to local environments (if we want them to "serve" those audiences)

Creating public goods and more meagre economic demands;

Mirrors a shift in "State to city" governance;

Network would leave spaces for human to engage one another.

Computational Decision-Making

- How the models use AI to "filter" public support/goods?

- How much power are we giving to (and who are the agents) in this exchange? (i.e. social welfare, credit scores, etc..)

Where are we at?

  • Noble myth: connected through whatever means is going to be net positive?
  • "Resocializing social media"
  • What values should technology be trying to augment? (diversity and inclusion, health and well-being); what is important about being human?
  • How do you make tech drive towards those values?
  • What we want it to represent: Harmony, belonging, more peaceful;
  • Loneliness in the crowd; loneliness in the cloud
  • Fragility: What does it mean today? What does it mean to build resilience (for the human or the community)?
  • What is the role of government?
  • Cooperatives (Community Benefits Societies)

What do we want?

  • We want to identify opportunities for progress - through engaging the cloud computing, ...
  • How do you build non-economic values into the market/system of today?
  • Design an experiment that tests some of the assumptions we have about technology, about how the intersection of human and technology amplifies the values and qualities of the human, leveraging the efficiency (if and when it presents) through technology
  • Power between competing stories of "embracing technology to unleash humanity" or "embracing humanity to unleash technology"
