7.2.26 Describe wind-, ventilation-, mechanical- and reverse stack-effect

  • Wind creates a high pressure area on one side of the building, low on the reverse;
  • Ventilation effect occurs when pressure differences are created by ventilation equipment operating in the home (ie. exhaust fans, clothes dryers, central vac)
    • Mechanical and Flue Effect are called "Combustion Effect" in KTHI:
    • Mechanical effect occurs when power-vented furnaces or water heaters operate
  • Flue effect occurs when the draft from chimneys creates negative pressure inside the house
  • Reverse stack occurs in cooling season, when air may be drawn in at the top of the building where pressure is lowest
