Coach Mia St-Aubin

I was 10 years old when I ran my first 5km. We used to spend the summer at camp as a family and so it was only natural that my brother and I ran our first race together on the roads that were our summer play ground. I was basically hooked from that first race and growing up I knew that this was something that would forever be a part of my life.

I was fortunate to grow up in a family where we were active and exercised for fun. Early on, my parents knew the importance of sports and healthy living so growing up, my brother Martin and I played every sport we could (and did pretty well with them!)

I competed at high levels throughout high school and university being a part of many championships in basketball, track and field, competitive swimming, volleyball, baseball, skiing and snowboarding.

Looking back I know that the interpersonal skills and confidence that I have gained through knowing how to take care of my body and through playing with teams have got me to where I am today.

There was a point in my life when I think my sports is what got me through struggles in my life. When I was 12 years old my parents and I began to notice that I wasn't learning like I should be. I was having trouble understanding assignments in school and I was having a hard time finishing my homework on my own. I was getting frustrated.

We decided it would be good for me to go see an educational psychologist to see what was going on. Many lengthy tests and many meetings later, I was devastated to find out I was "different". To this day I don't know the exact terminology that is used to describe my learning disability but nevertheless, I have a learning disability. From start to finish, high school was just one big struggle. There were a lot of successes along the way but not without a lot of help and hard work along the way!

During those years, I played a lot of sports and I was good at it! I would stay after school or use up my lunch time and free periods to get help from my wonderful teachers who helped me with my schoolwork. When that was finished, I would head to track practice or wake up early so I could get some more shots in on the court to make sure I was getting better. Athletics was my life and it was where I excelled. Sports are how I got through it.

I got all the help I could from my teachers and worked my butt off and after all, I graduated with honors and went on to graduate university with a double major in Criminology and Psychology. Without a doubt, I know that I was able to put my efforts in to school the way I did because I had an outlet. I had something that I could do that was fun, kept me in shape, and that is what kept me going.

After University, I continued with my track and field career until the age of 27. Some of those hard practices on the track, to this day, I'm not sure how I mustered up the strength to finish - hours of gruelling training and constant repetitions to get it just right. I realized one day that because all that I had been through and all that I had learned, I wanted to teach what I had learned through athletics to other people and share the impact it had on my life.

There's no doubt in my mind that what I was able to accomplish on the track or on the court when I was in high school set me up to RUN my life. It let me take on life's problems with more ease. I knew that if I could accomplish what I could physically then I could do almost anything.

I got a taste of what it was like to help someone else when in athletics I competed on the Canadian National Para-track and field team. I was a guide runner for a blind athlete on the team, I was essentially her eyes. We put in many hours of training together and developed a strong relationship that I will cherish. I then worked in gyms teaching others for a big corporation what I had learned hoping to make a difference one client at a time. With a roster of over 30 clients many, many hours later I thought that there had to be another way. There had to be a way for me to help more people at a time. That's when I embarked on this journey.

For the past 5 years, I have devoted my life to learning how to teach others how to RUN their life. Combining what I've learned from my mentors and through my real life experience, I believe with all of my being that if you take care of yourself physically, if you allow yourself some time each day to be active, you will learn to develop the tools you need to take on anything life can throw your way.

My hope is to teach others how to RUN their lives through exercise. Teaching that if you can push yourself in the gym then you can push yourself in every aspect of your life. You can push yourself to open that business you've always been dreaming of, to go for that promotion you've always wanted, to think outside the box and dream a little.

Fitness has helped me unlock the life of my dreams and I want, more than anything, to share that with the world.
