Navigating The Themes

Ok, let's revisit the theme store. In your admin, click on Themes in the navigation and click the button Visit the Theme Store. If you're excited about choosing your store design then the theme store is a little like a candy store - there's so much to choose from!

On the left-hand side of the page, there is a set of controls with which you can specify what types of themes interest you. For example, you can look at free or paid themes; you can focus on themes designed for particular industries; search for particular features; you can sort alphabetically, by popularity, by price or look at the most recent themes. You can also search for themes using the search box at the top right.

When you put the mouse pointer over one of the themes, notice the overlay that comes up displaying the theme name, style, and the price. Each theme can have a number of different variations called styles. In the screenshot above, I have the mouse pointer on one of two styles of the Providence theme which is for $120. Note that when you buy a theme, it includes all the styles available for that theme.

Finding the best theme for your store involves a fair bit of trawling through the themes available. It's worth scanning down through the full list of themes to see which ones catch your eye. If your web browser has it, it's a good idea to open each of the themes you like in separate browser tab. That way you can continue working through the list till you get to the end and then go through the detail for each individual theme you have selected.
Remember though, these themes and their styles are often only an indication of what the theme can look like. Most of the themes can be heavily customized. You need to be able to imagine the theme as it will appear with your logo, your product images, and with the colors adapted to suit your brand.

The theme developers Clean Themes, created a great little tool to help potential customers see how their Expression theme could be customized. They developed what they called a "sandbox" and in it you can safely play with the Expression theme: switch the theme style, upload your own logo, choose the colors used, change the< background textures and even upload a background image. Open up the Expression theme sandbox here.

Have a play in the sandbox and see how vastly a theme can change when you can customize it. On your store, you will also have your own graphics and product images. But notice also on this theme, there are elements of the page design that stay the same, no matter which changes you make. Many of the themes available for Shopify are very flexible, but there are limits. These limits can however be surpassed most of the time, if you have certain technical skills, or if you hire a designer to customize the theme.
