Stone Soup

While running and hiding you might have to become a little more flexible in your dietary choices. But you can always make soup.

And you can make soup out of anything. You'll just need a pot.

Boiling water can help to make it safe to drink. Heating scrounged food to above 160 degrees will also help to make it safe to eat.

If you're starving and short of supplies, soup might help fill an empty stomach, even if it's a thin broth. You might even have to resort to Stone Soup.

Stone Soup comes from an old folk tale about a hungry stranger who comes to a village, but can't get anyone to feed him. He then tells them that it doesn't matter and he will make his famous stone soup. He asked for a pot and some water and then seeks out a few large stones, which he places in the pot above a fire. The curious villagers grow close and the stranger muses how the soup is going to be delicious, but it might be nice with a few carrots, which a villager quickly produces and adds to the pot. Then onions. Then chicken. It goes on, until the soup is ready and everyone enjoys the feast and marvels at the delicious stone soup.

To make your version of stone soup, begin by boiling water in your pot and then moving the pot to somewhere on the fire or coals where it can simmer. Then add what you have. A couple of pieces of jerky, sliced up, can be a nice start. Maybe someone else in your party will have some canned goods. Don't be picky, add it in. An onion or carrots would be nice, but don't stress about it. Add whatever you have, but only make enough for those present to eat. There should be no leftovers.

You'll be surprised at how good stone soup can be, even without the stones.
