When the apocalypse happens, zombie or other variety, one of the first places you should stop as you flee for your life is your local hardware store.
Don't think of a hardware store as just someplace you can get a replacement part for your plumbing project. Think of it as an armory.
What can you get there that will be useful for your survival? Shovels, pruners, long-handled knife-like things, gloves, tool belts, tarps, plastic sheeting, even cord and rope of every type (and wire!)-everything you need to build light, portable shelter and to protect yourself.
While socks and shoes are more important that guns and knives, a good knife is universally helpful and a frequently-needed tool. If you don't own one you'll likely find many to choose from at the hardware store (I carry one with me at all times where it is legal to do so).
You'll also find sharpening stones and devices. Make sure you get those, too. As any good Boy Scout knows, a dull knife is more dangerous than a sharp one. Flashlights are tempting, and if you only need to survive in a world where things will soon return to normal, get a good one, along with batteries. But if the situation really is apocalyptic, then forget anything battery-powered and look for gas and oil lanterns. You'll likely find these in the home decorating department. And don't forget candles. Stock up on those as well as candle-making kits and supplies.
There are few things that I enjoy more than wandering the aisles of a good hardware store (bookstores and office supply stores are equally mesmerizing). Become familiar with your local store so you will know were to go when the dead rise, or perhaps the more unlikely event of you deciding to go camping.
