When To Upgrade Your Gear And When To Depend On Ol' Reliable

As a post apocalyptic shopper it will be tempting to continually look for the new and better. Yes, your clothes may get a little smelly, but if they're holding up well you might want to stick with them. The same goes for your other equipment and gear.

I am a big fan, especially in survival situations, of using the "good enough" gear. That bright yellow Pikachu backpack you first grabbed while running for your life is good enough to get you started. Hang onto it until you come across something better (almost anything will be better). But once you have a sturdy and reliable pack, stop looking for better ones. Use your time and energy to look for other needed stuff.

Here's my rule of thumb about upgrading gear: if it ain't broken and does the job, keep it and focus on something else.

What else should you focus on? Staying alive and away from zombies. Finding food and water. Getting a few hours of sleep.

Shop because you need something. In the world where the dead walk, shopping is a skill and a necessity, not a hobby.
