Gather Ye Nuts While Ye May

What's one of the most widely available, yet infrequently eaten foods around the world? Acorns.

You probably have some near where you live, strewn across the ground. And oak trees are widely distributed across the world. There are nuts everywhere.

So why don't we eat acorns when we eat almost all of the other types of tree nuts? Simple: acorns taste HORRIBLE. We've farmed and slowly genetically modified other trees through selective breeding. Oaks are resistant to selective breeding because of this determined little

symbiotes that inhabit them: squirrels.

Acorns are not poisonous. They just taste bad. But you can fix that.

Pick up a bunch of acorns. Shell them.

Next, boil them in water for 5-10 minutes. Dump the water and repeat 3 or 4 times.

Now you have some not so bad tasting nuts that are very nutritious.

Better yet, roast some up with one of those furry critters who are trying to eat your acorns. Roast squirrel with acorn stuffing is a lovely fall, zombie-survival dish.
