From a marketing perspective,
there's a number of different reasons why a business should
consider hiring a person with disabilities. The list below touches
on a just a few:
- Customers with disabilities, as
well as their families, friends and associates represent a major
market segment - in fact, over $47B in Canada and $544B in the US -
three times the size of the entire hispanic market
. They, like any other market segment, purchase products and
services from companies that they feel best meet their needs. A
business that demonstrates that it believes in and fosters an
inclusive environment, as well as a sensitivity to the needs of
customers with disabilities, will have a much better chance of
attracting those consumers. Or in business talk: mirror the
market to attract a wider customer base. The flip side of
that is, businesses that do employ people with disabilities are
better positioned to be able to design and deliver products that
actually do appeal to a diverse group of consumers, including those
with disabilities.
- From strictly a public relations
standpoint, hiring disabled workers can create a more positive
image for your business. That's obviously not the most noble of
reasons to hire a person with a disability, but let's be honest:
optics are important . This might be even more
true if you operate in a small community, where you can quickly
establish a reputation as a company that offers a more diverse
workforce. And, on a feel-good level, you might actually see that
other companies in your area will be inspired to follow your lead,
resulting in a more diverse business climate. And if so, go ahead
and pat yourself on your back. You did some good in your
community.
- A big part of marketing has to
do with attracting top talent. Maintaining an inclusive hiring
policy says a lot about your business culture. By fostering a more
inclusive and forward thinking business culture, you'll become more
attractive to prospective employees, which could be major advantage
to your business. Top talent leads to better
results.
