Possibilities

Multiple registries (of similar ilk). I don't see this one as often, but some couples go to several stores that are pretty much the same as the others and register for similar items at each one.

Pros

  • Guests can shop at a place close to them
  • You have more brand choices
  • You have a larger variety of items to register for

Cons

  • It will take longer to register than if you just went to one home store
  • You may get a lot of doubles or
  • There won't be a lot of choices at specific registries for guests
  • After returning items (because you always have to) you may not have a large amount of store credit at any one location to buy that expensive food processor you wanted but didn't get

Register at a superstore. Some brides choose to register at a superstore like Target. While there may not be as big a selection as a home and bath goods store, any store credit from unneeded returned gifts can be used on a larger variety of things like groceries and candy. Keep in mind that while superstores may sometimes have better prices, returns can be harder.

Register at two (or three) different stores. Register at a home store, a hardware store, and an online registry. This way, people have choices. Different types of stores appeal to different people. Not that it will ultimately matter if they like the store, but single guys mind shopping at a hardware store for your gift less than at a ritzy home store. However, while some non-home stores may have registries, they may not be very modernized. We registered at store where we had to write down all the bar codes and item descriptions.
