Surfaces start to disappear under clutter, they attract dust and dirt, and become harder to clean. Consider flat surfaces your preparation area -- not your storage area!
This includes the kitchen table, which is a magnet for mail, bills, kids' homework and I'll-just-put-it-here-for-a-moment kind of stuff. Remove anything from the table that is not essential to its ideal function. The dining area in your kitchen should be clear of everything unless you are eating. Butter, napkins, salt and pepper should all go back where they belong after each meal.
