Zone 1: Preparation

The preparation area should be near the sink for quick cleanup and it should have plenty of free counter space with easy access to knives and cutting boards.

The cooking center is near the stove and needs to have easy access to pots, pans, cooking utensils, and spices.

Zone 3: Eating
If your eating area is in the kitchen, whether it's a table or a counter, it needs clear space and easy access to eating utensils, napkins, salt and pepper and other condiments.

Both perishable and nonperishable items should be stored in such a way that you have access to them when you need them and so you can be aware of expiration dates. That way you won't waste money or run out of essential foods.
