In the middle of an avalanche, things happen very quickly. If you are about to be hit by an avalanche, the first thing you should do is attempt to ski sideways out of its path, if possible.
If this is not possible, get rid of your skis, ski poles, backpack, etc. It is only by doing this that you have a chance of remaining on the surface of the avalanche. When the snow closes about you, curl yourself up into a ball, as you can only protect your inner organs with your back. To ensure that you get air, try making an air pocket in front of your face so that you do not get snow in your mouth.
When the avalanche has stopped, try spitting to get a sense of up and down. Second try pushing one hand up in the direction of the surface. It seldom helps to cry for help, until you hear the rescuers nearby. Whatever you do, do not panic.
