After you've assessed the tree and its surrounding area, and determined a felling plan, prepare your equipment and begin planning your escape route. Since a falling tree can be unpredictable, plan two escape routes on the safe sides of the tree. You'll use one of these to safely move away from the tree as it hits the ground. Your escape routes should be at a 45-degree angle to each other and at least 15 feet long. They should also be clear of rocks, stumps, and other tripping hazards.
