Here are the steps you'll need to run a usability test. Each step is broken out in considerably more detail, but this is the high level information you need.
Step 1: Plan the Test
First, figure out exactly what you're testing and whether you will test it in person or remotely.
Step 2: Create Tasks and a Discussion Guide
The next step is to decide which tasks you will give your test participants and what questions to ask them. You will write all of this down in a discussion guide, which you will use during the testing sessions. A sample discussion guide is provided as part of this module.
Step 3: Recruit Participants
Recruit 4-6 participants for individual sessions. Plan to recruit another 4-6 after you've fixed any problems you find.
Step 4: Set Up the Environment
Set up the room or prepare a screenshare, depending on whether you're meeting in person or remotely. Record the user's screen session with something like Silverback (Mac only), Morae, or GoToMeeting.
Step 5: Moderate the Sessions
Make the participant comfortable while they perform the tasks from the discussion guide. Try to keep your questions open ended, and always allow the user enough time to complete each task.
Step 6: Analyze the Data
Debrief after each session with your observers and record the data in a persistent way. Prioritize changes based on the expected ROI.
