Acoustic Sealant

LISTEN...

Acoustic sealant is a butyl and rubber polymer material that remains flexible through its lifetime. It is used mainly in construction assemblies for sealing VAPOUR and AIR barrier materials, like polyethylene plastic.

Acoustic sealant is usually black or gray in colour, and is sold in tubes just like other sealants. The material sticks very well to many surfaces, and can be quite messy if it gets on clothing or skin. It's not suitable for areas that will be seen or touched after its application.

Considerations for working with acoustic sealant:

  • Carefully apply the sealant only to the area being sealed, avoiding squeeze out from too much applied. The bead should be compressed between layers in a continuous line.
  • A mechanical joint works best for creating a seal with acoustic sealant. For example, an overlap joint on polyethylene should be stapled or compressed with wood strapping.
  • Acoustic sealant doesn't harden like some other caulking products. The product will remain relatively pliant over its lifetime.
  • Areas for application must be clean and dust free. Sawdust will neutralize the adhesion of acoustic sealant, which is good to know when you get it on your clothing or skin.
  • Clean up must be done with solvents.
