Halitosis

Halitosis is the technical name for bad breath. We aren't talking about morning breath or bad breath after eating some garlic but the name for the problem when you have chronic bad breath and can't relieve it by brushing your teeth, having a drink of water or eating a mint.

85% of halitosis cases originate in the mouth and are treatable.

Halitophobia is a condition whereby people believe they have bad breath but don't.

What Causes Halitosis?

  • The main cause is poor oral hygiene. If you don't visit a dentist and hygienist regularly you could end up with halitosis along with gum disease and tooth decay.
  • Bad breath can be caused by certain types of oral bacteria which can occur when you don't have good oral hygiene.
  • Unfortunately, bacteria from tooth decay and gum disease can also cause bad breath. So once again, it is more likely to occur if you don't visit your dentist regularly.
  • Saliva helps cleanse your mouth, however, if you don't drink water regularly and end up with a dry mouth it could result in bad breath.
  • And we all know smoking causes all sorts of health issues including bad breath and staining of your teeth.
