Can You Make A Will During COVID-19 Restrictions?

Thankfully, in Scotland, you can write a Will remotely!

Your Solicitor will still have to make sure that they can verify your identity and are taking instructions from the correct person, but they can have discussions about your Will by video call. Drafts can be emailed or sent in the mail to you and final versions signed at home. You will still need a witness, however, solicitors can now act as a witness by video call if it's difficult for you to arrange to have someone else present when you sign.

Information You Need To Write A Will

You don't need a lot of information. Your Solicitor will guide you through the process and let you know what they need from you. They will have a chat about your personal, family and financial circumstances. It is a good idea to have a think about who you would like to inherit your assets in the event of your death, who to appoint as executors (they would be responsible for winding up your estate), and any key issues that you might have. This might include guardians and trusts for young children, inheritance tax questions, and protecting assets if there might be potential future care costs, for example.

So please don't delay writing or updating your Will at this time.
