Micromobility: Status in Ontario

Micromobility is transportation by small, lightweight devices operating at speeds typically below 25km/hr. It can be personal or shared.

E-Bikes

  • Max speed: 32km/hr, Max weight 120 kg
  • Design: must-have pedals
  • Must wear a helmet
  • Must be 16 yrs old (incl all passengers)

E-Scooters

  • 5 yr pilot started in Jan 2020
  • Municipalities must opt-in by passing bylaws permitting e-scooter use
  • Max speed: 24km/hr, Max weight: 45kg, Max wheel diameter: 17 inches
  • Must be 16 yrs old, helmet required < 18 yrs old
  • Must use bike lanes, paved shoulder or right side of the roadway
  • Must not leave e-scooters in a pedestrian passageway
