Burns

Most minor burns can be treated quickly, but serious burns require immediate medical attention.

What To Do

  1. Remove the person from the source of the burn.
  2. Cool the burn under cool running water for at least 10 to 20 minutes.
  3. Remove jewelry or tight items before swelling begins.
  4. Cover the burn loosely with a clean, non-stick dressing.

What Not To Do

  • Do not apply ice directly to a burn.
  • Do not use butter, oils, or home remedies.
  • Do not break blisters.

Seek Immediate Help If

  • The burn is large.
  • The burn involves the face, hands, feet, genitals, or major joints.
  • The person has difficulty breathing.
  • The burn was caused by electricity or chemicals.

Cooling the burn quickly can reduce pain and limit tissue damage.
