When To Call 911

When in doubt, call 911. Emergency dispatchers can help determine the urgency of a situation.

Call 911 Immediately If Someone Has:

  • Unconsciousness or unresponsiveness
  • Trouble breathing or no breathing
  • Severe bleeding that cannot be controlled
  • Signs of a heart attack or stroke
  • A serious head, neck, or spinal injury
  • A severe allergic reaction
  • Major burns
  • A seizure lasting several minutes or repeated seizures

While Waiting For Help

  1. Stay with the person.
  2. Keep them as comfortable as possible.
  3. Follow instructions from the dispatcher.
  4. Be prepared to direct responders to the location.

It is always better to call and discover the situation is less serious than to delay when immediate medical care is needed.
