BEPS Webinar # 1: The Important Role of Building Emissions Performance Standards in Net Zero

Date: April 29th, 2025

In this webinar, Natalia Enriquez Goyes and Ekaterina Tzekova from The Atmospheric Fund took participants on a Building Emissions Performance Standards (BEPS) journey. This webinar explored the role of BPS in net zero targets, why they are essential based on research on uptake from voluntary versus mandatory standards, and the progress occurring across North America. The speakers shared lessons learned from ongoing efforts that can inform local leading practices and approaches.

To inform future BEPS CoP efforts, following the presentation, participants engaged in break-out groups to explore municipal BEPS needs, concerns and required support. This webinar was the first in a series that aims to build municipal capacity and capabilities for exploring the role of BEPS in their community net-zero commitments.

BEPS Webinar # 5: Equity Considerations in BEPS

Date: December 2nd, 2025

In this webinar, Katharine Turner from Efficiency Canada and Ekaterina Tzekova and Natalia Enriquez Goyes from The Atmospheric Fund (TAF) shared approaches to integrate equity into the design of Building Emissions Performance Standards (BEPS). By centering equity, BEPS can create tangible benefits for low-income households, renters, and equity-deserving groups, while mitigating harm for those most vulnerable to the impacts of climate change.

BEPS Webinar # 6: Energy Benchmarking in Durham Greener Buildings

Date: January 22, 2026

Benchmarking the energy use of buildings is a critical first step in understanding the performance of our existing building stock. It provides the foundation for jurisdictions to increase transparency and scale up retrofits, enabling municipalities, building owners, and occupants to assess relative energy performance and identify opportunities for retrofits that reduce both energy consumption and emissions.

Join Ian McVey (Durham Region) and Yasmine Hawz and Brent Kopperson (Windfall Ecology Centre) as they share insights from the Durham Greener Buildings program. We explored program design, the roadmap for establishing effective benchmarking initiatives, and how these efforts accelerate climate action at the community level.

BEPS Webinar # 7: City of Toronto Energy and Water Benchmarking By Law

Date: March 12, 2026

In this BEPS CoP webinar, Devon Stopps and Rebecca Mallinson from the City of Toronto will share insights on Toronto's Energy and Water Reporting Bylaw (Municipal Code Chapter 367, Building Emissions Performance). This session will explore why Toronto's Energy and Water Reporting Bylaw was introduced, the value it delivers, and how it complements provincial energy and water reporting requirements.

BEPS Webinar # 8: Unlocking the Full Value of Building

Date: April 23, 2026

When the benefits of retrofits are value-stacked -job creation, enhanced resilience, improved insurance offerings, or opportunities for grid interactivity - the financial case for retrofits becomes stronger and more actionable. Recognizing the value of these retrofit outcomes is one way to unleash a wave of retrofit activity in existing buildings as they both offset the upfront capital costs and lower operating costs.
