Red Flags — Call For Help Now

Most check-ins are calm and simple. However, some signs mean you should call for help immediately rather than try to handle things yourself.

Call 911 Or Emergency Services Immediately If:

  • They don't answer the door or phone and there's reason to believe they're home and possibly in distress
  • They appear confused, unresponsive, or unable to communicate clearly
  • They show signs of a medical emergency (difficulty breathing, chest pain, signs of a stroke)
  • There's a smell of gas, smoke, or signs of fire
  • A medical device they depend on (oxygen, dialysis, refrigerated medication) has lost power for an extended time
  • They are in a temperature-related emergency (signs of heatstroke or hypothermia)
Important

If something feels seriously wrong, even if you can't fully explain why, treat that as enough reason to call for help. You don't need to be certain to call 911 - dispatchers are trained to help you assess the situation.

What To Do While You Wait

  • Stay with them if it's safe to do so
  • Keep the door unlocked or accessible for responders if possible
  • Note anything responders should know (medical conditions, medications, mobility needs)

When someone's safety is in question, it is always better to call and have it turn out to be unnecessary than not to call at all.
