The Big Systemic Issues in Education

When we look at the critical issues facing educators around the world, these ten appear the most important and provide a starting point for the suggestions which follow:

  1. The poor performance of many public education systems on many dimensions of learning.
  2. Policy Tensions - GERM versus Equity.
  3. The capture of public education by private interests.
  4. Education as a Tool for the Maintenance of Inequality.
  5. The new imperialism of data and growth of datafication.
  6. Personalization versus Learning and Teaching.
  7. The De-Professionalization of Teaching.
  8. Declining Per Capita Investment in Public Schools and the Growth of Private Schooling.
  9. Pseudoscience Masquerading as Truth.
  10. Judging Schools as if They Were All the Same.

These ten challenges suggest that there is a great deal to do to support teachers and students in their desire to learn and create success for themselves and their schools.
