Fragrant Water Lily

The Fragrant Water Lily keeps its own schedule.

As the morning sun warms the lake, its flowers slowly open.

By evening...

They close again.

For several days, each blossom repeats this daily rhythm before fading beneath the water.

It's one of the easiest ways to watch a plant "move"-you just have to visit the lake at different times of day.

Insight

Water lily leaves don't just float on the surface-they create tiny islands. Fish hide beneath them, frogs rest on them, dragonflies land on them, and insects use them as shelter from predators above.

A single lily pad is its own little ecosystem.

Next time you're at the lake...

Find a patch of water lilies in the morning.

Then come back that evening.

You'll discover that the lake looks different-not because it changed...

...but because the flowers did.
