Giant Puffball
At first, it looks like someone left a soccer ball in the woods.
But it's a mushroom.
The Giant Puffball can grow larger than a basketball and weigh several kilograms. Unlike most mushrooms, it has no obvious cap or stem-just a smooth white ball sitting on the forest floor.
Inside, something incredible is happening.
When the mushroom is young, the inside is pure white and firm. As it matures, that white flesh transforms into millions-even billions-of microscopic spores.
Eventually, the outer skin dries and cracks.
One tap from a curious squirrel...
A raindrop...
Or even your foot...
...and a brown cloud of spores bursts into the air, drifting away to begin the next generation.
A single Giant Puffball can release billions of spores-far more than there are people on Earth.
Almost all of them will fail.
It only takes one to land in the right place.
