We prepare for tree pose by beginning in Todasana (standing mountain pose). Todasana encompasses all of the alignment components that we bring into each posture. In Todasana we set the feet, engage the legs, neutralize the pelvis and stabilize by activating the core. If you lose balance in tree pose, simply come back to each of these alignment cues in turn, coming back into the posture.
Begin in Tadasana, resting the gaze towards the floor (without lowering the chin) and centering with ujjayi breathing. Shift your weight onto the left leg, keeping the legs and core engaged.
INHALE, bringing the right foot into the left
leg. You can bring the foot below or above the knee, but never
place the
foot directly on the knee. If you are new to this pose, placing the
foot lower is advantageous, as it allows more concentration on the
alignment elements rather than on flexibility.
EXHALE, keeping the arms reaching towards the
floor a nd the hands engaged (palms facing
forwards with fingers
spreading brightly).
Take several ujjayi breaths here, gently observing each alignment element in this posture. Keep the breath steady and the eyes focused on a single point. Release Tree Pose by reversing the above steps, following the breath back into Todasana.
Repeat on the other side.
