Where Do I Start?

Where to start with freelancing depends on what it is you want to do as a freelancer.

Right off the bat I'm going to say this; prepare for rejection after rejection after rejection. It does not reflect on you. It reflects on the market and the economics of freelancing. Don't let the rejection derail you, eventually you will find some success.

So take the leap!

Below are just some examples of occupations that frequently appeal to freelancers. If you currently have a job you plan to leave in order to start freelancing, it's wise to keep your job for awhile as you settle in to your new career (there can be some bumps along the way!).

  • Photographer
  • Writer (Travel Writer/Technical Writer/Medical Writer/Reviewer, etc.)
  • Graphic/Web Designer
  • Blogger
  • Teacher/Tutor/Translator/Interpreter
  • Musician
  • Filmmaker
  • IT Worker
  • PR/Social Media Marketer
  • Editor

Again these are just some examples, there are many, many more. Each of these professions will require slightly different approaches, though some overarching know-how remains the same. In the next few pages I'll dig in to some of these items more specifically. It would probably take hundreds of guides to delve as deeply into each as I'd like-and this is intended to be a beginner's guide-but you can always feel free to contact me (Alissa.Fleck@gmail.com) for further assistance/advice and I will continue to update the guide in the future.

Now, let's dig in!
