Repairing The Kolhapuri Weir

The second work was repair and strengthening of an eight-year-old Kolhapuri Type Weir, which had become non-functional due to leakage in base and damage to slab (Structure 2). The restoration of the structure involved repair of 21 weir doors, rectification of base leakage, building of earthen bund and de-silting and deepening of river bed. These were done using local wisdom and appropriate technology. A trench, 40 ft. in length and 3 ft. depth, was dug, lined with plastic sheets and filled with black cotton soil. This was again strengthened by the construction of 40 feet long earthen bund. 21 doors were fixed permanently. The riverbed was de-silted and deepened by 12 -15 feet. The length of the riverbed that underwent deepening was 400 meters, up to a width of 200 metres.
