No matter which approach your group takes to private sponsorship, it's important to consider the different skills, capabilities, and levels of commitment you'll need. For example:
• How much money can your group members contribute? How much
still needs to be contributed by others?
• Is there a family member here in Canada who will also contribute
to the sponsorship?
• Do you know others in your community that have been involved in
previous sponsorships or other refugee related work who may be able
to help with the processing, provide donations, or assist in the
settlement of the newcomers?
• Do you have group members who can offer time during 9-5 hours to
help your newcomers get to appointments?
• Are there people who can help move furniture?
• Is there someone who is capable of managing the finances?
As you consider the requirements of the sponsorship you will begin
to find others who will be able to join you in the partnership of
sponsoring. It is up to you to find individuals within your
community, family, friends and colleagues that would be willing to
assist you and the refugee applicant throughout the sponsorship.
DIRC, SAHs and settlement agencies do not assist in this
process.
Group
philosophy
As your group comes together, it's a good idea to have an open
discussion about your approach to sponsorship. If you can, invite
someone from a similar background to talk to your group about their
experiences and share some insights into cultural and religious
beliefs that your refugee/refugee family may (or may not) have so
that you can be mindful of these as you help them to settle.
Discuss with your group the importance of advice and empowerment.
Your role is to help the newcomer get the knowledge and tools they
need to settle and succeed here. They are independent adults who
need to work with you.
You'll need to maintain strict confidentiality, especially when it
comes to health and trauma issues. Respect personal boundaries and
understand that newcomers often have difficulty saying 'no' to
sponsorship groups in the first year.
