Before The Event

1. Do your homework ahead of the event. Be prepared and read up on the topics and the speakers at the event. Be ready to demonstrate genuine interest in people and companies. How? By showing them you know who they are and what they do and asking relevant questions. This will gain you instant credibility.

2. Update your LinkedIn profile. Set your social accounts to private and go All-star with LinkedIn. How? Check our LinkedIn guide. Keep in mind that a poor social media decision can be costly.

3. Bring enough business cards. You got enough? Ok. Go get some more. It's better to have some in your pocket on your way home than not have enough for the event. Don't spam people with your cards, but hand it to people you actually had a meaningful conversation with. Don't just go handing them out.

4. Dress appropriately. If you have doubts about something than don't wear it. Allow yourself an accessory. Maybe a pair of bright shows. Something memorable. It will make it easier for people to remember you and it will work as a conversation starter.

5. Set goals. Have reasonable expectations. What you are there to do? Why are you attending the event? Are you trying to feel the vibe of a specific organization? Are you going to meet half a dozen new people? Are you trying to meet three specific people? It takes a bit of pre-planning, but it will allow you to feel satisfaction from the event after accomplishing your goals. And even going over them.
