Lack Of Patient Education

It is unlikely that a patient would reveal that they cannot adhere to a plan because they don't understand it. Patient education is an important component in the plan of care. It includes an understanding of why they're feeling a certain way, and how a specific regimen can help them.

The "how" includes a clear understanding of the instructions, the purpose, and the details of the regimen, resulting in shared decision making between you and your patient.

How to Address:

  • Use tools in the exam room-such as educational videos-to illustrate your points.
  • Provide literature or links to additional online resources as take-aways item so patients may continue their education outside of your office.
  • Encourage patients to sign up for your practice's e-newsletter and to follow you on social media. These mediums allow you to control the message and present approved educational content to your patients.
