Problem:

Homeowner Question: After I had insulation upgrades completed within my home, signs of mould/mildew became more evident. Why?

Cause: Why is this happening?

Increasing insulation values in only some areas will create a larger difference between the well insulated areas and the lesser R-value areas. This differential can lead to experiencing condensation in areas that were not noticed previously. Now that your home is more air-tight the moisture in the home remains inside longer as well. These two factors, combined, can lead to mould and mildew growth in cooler areas and areas with little air movement, if the moisture is not properly removed from the space.

Solution: Mould/Mildew

  • If the home has an HRV it may need to be rebalanced or changed to a more appropriately sized unit
  • If the home owner does not have an HRV then they will now require one
  • Consult a ventilation specialist to determine the best course of action
